Walk Through the Article
Introduction
Lenard McKelvey, who is better known professionally as Charlamagne Tha God, is an American radio host and television personality. He is best known as one of the co-hosts of the nationally syndicated radio show, The Breakfast Club along with DJ Envy and Angela Yee. In the past, he has also been an integral star in the shows Guy Code, Guy Court, and Girl Code. He has also been the host of the popular MTV2 show called Uncommon Sense.
Early Life
McKelvey was born on June 29, 1980, in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. He had a pretty dark background growing up. He used to be part of the groups who would sell drugs. Thus at a young age, he was arrested multiple times on charges of possession of marijuana and cocaine with the intent to distribute it. He was also arrested after witnessing a shooting from the back seat of a car. However, he got his act together after such incidents in his life.
He recalls about how he changed his name to Charles as he didn’t want the people he sold the drugs to know his real name. Later, when he went to night school, during a history class he stumbled upon a word called Charlemagne which in French turns out to be Charles the Great.
Later, he added Tha God as well because he liked how he sounded. Thus, the name Charlamagne Tha God has stuck since then. He says that growing up, he took Howard Stern as a big role model and liked the honest approach that he had to ask questions.
Career
After his release from prison, McKelvey came into the realization that he had to get his life on track. He started to regularly attend night school and later his hard work paid off as he got a job as a radio intern. His habit of raising the upfront questions soon made him the talk of the radio town.
Williams was one of the earliest ones to have played a part in him getting into this field but he later stated that their relationship had gotten bad over the years though Williams was viewed as a mentor. 2010 was a big year for Tha God as he became a part of The Breakfast Club along with DJ Envy and Angela Yee.
He has become an integral part of The Breakfast Club with it reaching national markets at the end of 2015, with an average growth of 33 percent in “measured metros”. The next year the show’s numbers rose 25 percent in the crucial 18-to-34 demo and 42 percent among the 25-to-54 graybeards.
With his name rising, he also started getting active on television. Guy Code was a big hit where he was an important member in the comedy set-up. He later appeared in similar shows like Girl Code and Guy Court.
Charlamagne The God Net Worth
According to Celebrity Net Worth, he has an estimated net worth of $10 million. He has more than 2.6 million followers on Instagram. McKelvey has had amazing success as a radio host and has made a lot of money being a part of multiple hit television shows over the years.
He also released his self-help book called “Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It”, which went on to become a New York Times best-seller for more than 2 months. He described the book as a street smart self-help guide which offered blunt advice in eight different principles.
Personal Life
Once the topic about transgender woman had come out during an interview with the comedian Lil Duval. He talked a bit negatively towards this community which enraged this group a lot. Trans activists went on to call for the show to be boycotted or cancelled.
McKelvey is known for asking the elephant-in-the-room questions that sometimes make headlines all over the internet. He is not afraid to ask the questions even though they may not be “Politically Correct”. This was best described when he was interviewing the rapper Kanye West. West had just recently released “Yeezus” but Tha God was not impressed much with this work calling it as “whack”.
He even got the whole internet talking with him later calling the rapper as “Kanye Kardashian”. His no-holds barred approach sometimes gets a lot of negative comments from the opposing fans.
