Clark was born on January 8, 1957 in Kinston, North Carolina. He went to Garinger High school where he played quarterback. He then attended Clemson University. In his senior season in 1981, he won Gator Bowl and was also inducted to Clemson Hall of Fame.

Clark was then selected by San Francisco 49ers in the tenth round of 1979 NFL draft. In his eight NFL season with 49ers, he tallied 506 catches for 6,750 yards and 48 touchdowns. He also made Pro Bowl in 1981 and 1982.

It was in 1981 at NFC Playoffs, Dwight Clark made his name in NFL. In a match against Dallas Cowboys, the 49ers trailed 27-12 in the final minute of play. He leaped and caught 6 yard pass from the quarterback Joe Montana to give the 49ers 28-27 victory and advance to Super Bowl XVI. That moment is one of the most famous in the history of NFL and has been known as “The Catch”.  He finished that game with eight receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

After playing nine seasons with 49ers, he retired in 1987.  He was a member of two Super Bowl winning teams. Following his contribution, the club retired his number #87 in 1988. After that, he served as a team executive for the 49ers and was the General Manager and director of Football operations for the Cleveland Browns from 1992-2002.

On March of 2017, he was diagnosed with amyotropic lateral sclerosis. On June 4, 2018 he died from the disease. At the time of his death, he was with his wife Kelly and three children.
