The 1997 film that brought Hollywood’s attention onto its future stars, Ben and Matt, didn’t have a very smooth start, to say the least. The first draft was written by Matt and was intended for a one-act play for a final assessment on a class he’s taking at Harvard University. Most of the parts are removed when it is assessed. After that, he asked Affleck’s assistance to co-write a screenplay with him and the whole script finished in 1994. As per Ben in an interview with Today: “We were unemployed and we weren’t writing the script on a deadline either. Nobody was expecting it, so we were just these two idiots in our basement writing this thing.”
Castle Rock Entertainment bought the rights to the script but demanded to drop the thriller aspect of the film and focus on the relationship between Will and Sean (the therapist played by the late Robin Williams). Matt and Ben stated that they wanted to play the lead roles but many executives wanted a much more popular face like Pitt and DiCaprio. Eventually, CRE placed the script in limbo, then asked Ben and Matt to look for another buyer for the script within 30 days, so that CRE could get the money they initially paid for it back. Otherwise, the ownership of the script will be declared by CRE themselves.
Ben Affleck then decided to approach Kevin Smith with the script, which was his director at Chasing Amy (1997). Smith liked the narrative and forwarded it to Harvey Weinstein at Miramax. Weinstein loved the script, paid Castle Rock for it and allowed Matt and Ben to star in it. The movie was released in 1997, received several huge accolades and the rest is history.

Matt and Ben would be reunited once again since their first writing collaboration in Good Will Hunting.
