Background & Early Childhood
Steven Van Zandt was born as Steven Lento to an Italian family in Massachusetts on November 22, 1950. His grandfather was an immigrant from Calabria, and his maternal side of the family hails from Naples. When his mother remarried in 1957, he took the last name of his stepfather – William Brewster Van Zandt. His family relocated to New Jersey when he was 7.
Steven Zandt went to Middletown high school but, at one point, got kicked out for keeping long hair. However, he re-joined the school to please his mother and graduated in 1968.
As a teenager, Steve fell victim to an unfortunate accident causing him to smash his head across his car’s windshield – an incident that left multiple scars on his head. The severity of the damage prevented hair from growing back on his head in many places. To cover it up, he began wearing hats and then large bandanas – a signature that defines him to this day.
Steven Van Zandt, also known as Little Steven or Miami Steve, ventured into music career as a member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band.
