Kentrell Gaulden, who is better known as NBA Young boy, is an American rapper. His popularity has been one that has had many allegations and controversies. One of his stand out moments in his career has been the success of his song called “Outside Today” that managed to peak at number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Early Life

He was born on October 20, 1999 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was actually raised by his grandmother. This was because his father had been sentenced to 55 years in prison when he was growing up. Gaulden was into hip-hop from a very young age and his passion led him to drop out when he was only in the 9th grade so that he could fully pursue what his heart wanted.

Sadly, his grandmother died of heart failure and had to move in with his friend named 3Three. Back in 2014 when he referred himself as NBA Youngboy more frequently, he released his first mixtape called Life Before Fame. He then released mixtapes in quick succession that he had been working on vigorously. They were Mind of a Menace, Mind of a Menace 2, and then Mind of a Menace 3. This was thanks to the work that he had put in during his time in the detention center. He made these mixtapes with very finite resources with the main resource being a microphone he bought from Walmart when he was 14 years old.

These mixtapes helped Youngboy solidify his position as a rapper with his own unique style and type of hip-hop as well. With the rise in popularity, he has made some changes into his personal brand as a rapper. His manager was quick to realize that there may be an issue with trademark for his name that is directly linked with the National Basketball Association(NBA). Therefore, today he refers to himself as Youngboy Never Broke Again rather than NBA Youngboy.

In 2016, Gaulden had huge success with the mixtape called 38 Baby. But the real attention from the public came with his long feud with fellow Baton Rouge rapper Scotty Cain. This feud happened over songs and the beef continued with each opposition dissing each other through freestyle raps. Although no real violence ever occurred between the two Baton Rouge rappers, their feuding attracted a lot of attention.

He has gone on to do collaborations with top artists like Meek Mill, Young Thug, 21 Savage, and Yo Gotti. A recent mixtape called AI YoungBoy managed to peak at number 24 on the Billboard 200 which is a very big achievement that can be thanked to a single of the mixtape called “Untouchable”. His most recent release has been his debut studio album called “Until Death Call My Name”.
