Early Life and Education

Oritsé Williams was born on November 27, 1986, in London, England, to parents of Nigerian and Caribbean descent. From an early age, Williams showed musical talent and attended Larmenier & Sacred Heart Primary School in West London, where he learned to play the trumpet. He also attended Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School in London and spent two years at the British International School in Lagos, Nigeria, during his youth.

At the age of 12, Williams’ life took a significant turn when his mother, Sonia, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. This diagnosis transformed Williams into a young carer, a responsibility he embraced alongside caring for his two brothers and a sister. Rather than allowing this burden to define him negatively, Williams became inspired to pursue a music career with a meaningful purpose. He and his younger brother made a deliberate choice about their futures: Oritsé would pursue a career in music to generate income, while his brother would study biomedical science with hopes of eventually finding a cure for his mother’s condition. This shared family mission became a powerful motivator throughout Williams’ formative years and shaped his character and values.

Career Highlights

Oritsé Williams’ breakthrough came in 2008 when he formed a boy band called UFO (Unique Famous Outrageous) with fellow musicians Aston Merrygold, Marvin Humes, and JB Gill. The group auditioned for the fifth series of the British television competition The X Factor but changed his name to JLS (Jack the Lad Swing) after discovering that a rock band already held the UFO name. The rebranded JLS made a remarkable impression on the competition, reaching the final and finishing as runners-up to Alexandra Burke, a feat that launched them into international stardom.

During his time as a group, JLS achieved extraordinary commercial and critical success. The band sold over 10 million records worldwide and dominated the UK charts with five number-one singles and four top-three albums. His debut single “Beat Again” became an immediate hit and helped establish them as one of the defining boy bands of their generation. JLS earned numerous accolades, winning two BRIT Awards, including British Breakthrough and British Single of the Year in 2010, as well as five MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards. The group remained together for five years before announcing their split on April 24, 2013, following the release of their fifth album, “Goodbye – The Greatest Hits.”

Following JLS’s disbandment, Williams pursued a solo career. In September 2013, he won the ITV dancing competition “Stepping Out,” demonstrating his versatility as an entertainer. In 2014, he signed a record deal with Island Records (Universal) and released his critically acclaimed solo project “Waterline,” featuring American rapper Pusha T. Beyond his musical achievements, Williams received the MS Inspiration of the Year Award for his fundraising efforts and advocacy work related to multiple sclerosis. He also produced and presented the Channel 4 documentary “Britain’s Youngest Carers,” which highlighted the experiences of young people in similar situations to his own childhood.

Personal Life

Williams’ personal life has been marked by his unwavering commitment to family and his openness about significant life experiences. He previously dated dancer AJ Azari from 2012 to 2015, and the couple welcomed a son named Omre in 2014. Williams remained devoted to his role as a father while pursuing his entertainment career.

In September 2022, Oritsé announced his marriage to Kazz Kumar, a marketing manager and former singer. His wedding ceremony was particularly meaningful, as it took place in Jamaica as a special tribute to his mother, Sonia, who continues to battle multiple sclerosis. Kazz has spoken warmly of Williams, describing him as “the sweetest man and the kindest soul in the entire world.” She also reflected on his relationship, stating that she knew from his first date that she wanted to be with him for the rest of her life.

The couple’s journey to parenthood together proved challenging but ultimately joyful. Kazz experienced two devastating miscarriages as they attempted to expand his family, a difficult period that Williams has described as very challenging to navigate emotionally. However, their perseverance was rewarded when they welcomed their newborn son Shiva, bringing happiness and hope to their growing family. Throughout these personal trials, Williams has remained a vocal advocate for mental health awareness and the importance of open communication about grief and loss, particularly regarding miscarriage, helping to destigmatize these difficult experiences for other families.
