Rosenstein was born on January 13, 1965 in Philadelphia. His father Robert ran small business while his mother Gerri Rosenstein was a bookkeeper and school board president. He went to Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Economics in 1986. In 1989, he received his Juris Doctor, cum laude from Harvard Law School.
His political career started in 1990 after he joined United states Department of Justice through the Attorney General’s Honors Program. During the Clinton Administration, he served as a counsel to Deputy Attorney General Philip B. Heymann and Special Assistant to Criminal Division Assistant Attorney General Jo Ann Harris.
In 2005, President George W. Bush nominated him to serve as the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland. During that time, he successfully prosecuted leaks of classified information, corruption, murders and burglaries and effective taking on corruption within police departments. Rosenstein was also nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, but his nomination was never considered by U.S. Senate.
On February 1, 2017, Donald Trump nominated Rosenstein to serve as a Deputy Attorney General for the United Sates Department of Justice. The same month, he appointed special counsel Robert Mueller to investigate ties between Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 election.
Regarding his personal life, he is married to Lisa Barsoomian. She is an American lawyer who works for the National Institutes of Health. Together they have two daughters named Julie Rosenstein and Allison Rosenstein.
