Born on May 27, 1988 in Washington, Vontae attended Dunbar High School where he played football as cornerback and wide receiver. He recorded 38 tackles and eight interceptions and was honored many awards during his senior season. He then went to Illinois college and had a great freshman season for the Fighting Illini recording 30 tackles and intercepting one passes. In 2007, he started all 12 games and recorded 56 tackles including 13 in the Rose Bowl against USC.
In 2009, he was selected in the first round of 2009 NFL Draft by Miami Dolphins. He signed a five year, $10.25 million contract which included $7.43 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $500,000. He made his debut against Atlanta Falcons and ma de a solo tackle during their 10-7 loss. He finished his first season as a rookie with 51 combined tackles, 11 pass deflections and four interceptions in 16 games and nine starts. He was selected in All-Rookie team by Pro Football Weekly.
