Born on May 27, 1988 in Washington, Vontae attended Dunbar High School where he played football as cornerback and wide receiver. He recorded 38 tackles and eight interceptions and was honored many awards during his senior season. He then went to Illinois college and had a great freshman season for the Fighting Illini recording 30 tackles and intercepting one passes. In 2007, he started all 12 games and recorded 56 tackles including 13 in the Rose Bowl against USC.
In 2009, he was selected in the first round of 2009 NFL Draft by Miami Dolphins. He signed a five year, $10.25 million contract which included $7.43 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $500,000. He made his debut against Atlanta Falcons and ma de a solo tackle during their 10-7 loss. He finished his first season as a rookie with 51 combined tackles, 11 pass deflections and four interceptions in 16 games and nine starts. He was selected in All-Rookie team by Pro Football Weekly.
He was a regular starter in his second season with Miami Dolphins. He finished 2011 season with 43 combines tackles, nine pass deflections, four interceptions and a sack in 12 games and 12 starts. In 2012, he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts. His first season with Colts ended with 51 combined tackes, seven passes defensed, three interceptions and a sack in 10 games and 10 starts.
On March 11, 2014, he signed four year, $39 million contract with $20 million guaranteed with Indianapolis Colts. He played with Colts until 2017 and on February 16, 2018, Davis signed a one year deal with Buffalo Bills worth up to $5 million with $3.5 million guaranteed.
On September 16, 2018 in a game against Los Angeles Chargers, Davis apparently quit during halftime. He started the game but said that he “had an honest moment with myself” during it and told the coach Sean McDormott that he was done.
Regarding his personal life, he married his girlfriend Megan Harpe in 2015.
