His father regularly created mixtapes for Phil and his sister, introducing him to diverse musical influences from an early age. He began with the tuba before switching to drums, and by age 14 had formed his own band called Nubert Circus. Alongside music, Elverum harbored ambitions as a filmmaker, frequently creating short films with friends and screening them at local coffee shops.
Elverum attended Anacortes High School and briefly attended Evergreen State College, though he had little interest in traditional higher education. Instead, he was drawn to the vibrant music scene, finding his outlet at The Business, a local record store where he worked in the mid-1990s. In the backroom of this shop, Elverum began experimenting with recording equipment, laying the groundwork for The Microphones. The store’s owner, Bret Lunsford, released two early cassettes on his KNW-YR-OWN label.

Elverum’s career took a significant turn when he moved to Olympia, Washington, in 1997. There he caught the attention of Calvin Johnson, the influential owner of K Records. In 2003, Elverum established Mount Eerie as his primary ongoing project, named after the mountain on Fidalgo Island near his childhood home. In 2004, he created his own record label, P.W. Elverum and Sun, Ltd. By 2019, he had created over 40 studio albums across his various projects.
Among his most significant recent works are A Crow Looked at Me (2017), a deeply personal album confronting his wife’s death from pancreatic cancer, and the ambitious Microphones in 2020, composed as a single continuous 44-minute song. He has also worked as a producer, notably on Mirah’s debut album.
