Era Istrefi is an Kosovo Albanian singer and songwriter. She is best known for her hit single called “BonBon” which made her an instant hit. However, she has been making music a long time before that. After the success of this single, she went on to have comparisons with Rihanna as well as the singer Sia.

Early Life

Era Istrefi was born on 4 July 1994, in a place called Pristina. Her mother Suzana Tahirsylaj was a popular singer during the 1980’s and 1900’s while her father, Nezir Istrefi worked as a journalist. Sadly, her father died untimely in 2004 which had implications for her mother as she was put in a situation where she had to get away from the entertainment business she was in. She also has a singer named Nora Istrefi who works as a singer as well and is well-known in her country.

She has mentioned that she has been singing for more than 10 years. Her daily activity was to go to school, learn and then play music. She says that from a young age she had the habit of staying updated with the type of music that was getting attention. This helped her immensely to always keep up to date with recent trends. When she was only 16 years old, she discovered Jamaican music as well as reggae which she says is reflected in her song today.

She also recalls that she was having a hard time deciding whether to pursue a career in music or to continue studying. She asked herself questions like “Do I really want to be famous?”. This was an anxious moment in her life as making such a big decision at a young age can go any way around.  Later, she released “Mani Per Money” (“Money Mania”) in 2013 which gave her the confidence that she could make a career out of her passion.

Career

She went on to release the singles “A Po Don?” and “E Dehun”. These received some great remarks as well as some mixed receptions. She the  released “13” which was even featured in the popular V Magazine. However, it was in late 2015 that her recognition would take shape in the international scene. “BonBon” was officially released which became a big hit on social media platforms. She was now named as the Rihanna of Kosovo. Because of its success, she even released its English version on June of 2016 which included the rapper Post Malone. She recently teamed up with Will Smith and Nicky Jam for the Official FIFA World Cup Song on May 25, 2018.

In her single called “E Dehun”, The Serbian Orthodox Church was outraged after the video depicted a woman semi-nude dancing in the abandoned Church of Christ the Saviour, Pristina calling her actions as “demonic”.

She has her own unique style and at times such scenes might feel a bit offensive to some groups but it is all a part of the business. She is a supporter of LGBT rights and had received her Albanian citizenship in 2016.
