Introduction

Dillian Whyte is a British professional boxer who has held the WBC Silver heavyweight title since 2017. Whyte is one of the top names in the boxing world today in the heavyweight class ranking at number six on the world’s heavyweight list released by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board.

Early Life

Whyte was born on 11 April 1988 in Port Antonio, Portland, Jamaica.  Whyte grew up here before moving to the United Kingdom in his early teens for a better life. He confessed in an interview how there was almost zero opportunity for education in Jamaica but it changed once he moved to England. He later started boxing at Miguel’s boxing gym, which he mentions was an important step in his life.

This was because of his background that made it difficult for him to enter other fields with conviction. Reflecting on his childhood, he says that boxing “saved” his life. The self-awareness he had at the time that he would do very ell in this sport in comparison with anything else in life, gave him a strong direction in life and that is probably why he is one of the elites in the boxing world today.

Career

Before getting fully into boxing, Whyte was actually a professional kick boxer which was slightly different than the former. His career in kickboxing was flourishing with one of the highlights of his career in the world of kickboxing being the two-time British heavyweight kickboxing champion by claiming the BIKMA Super Heavyweight British Championship title.

He became one of the best in the sport in the U.K. being ranked as number 1 for five years straight in his 95 kg category. He would make his debut in MMA in 2008 where he dominated his match being Mark Stroud.

One of his earliest bouts at an amateur level came when he was only 20 years old. This was a match against Anthony Joshua, who would also became a very big name in boxing in the future. The match ended with an unanimous decision in Whyte’s side. Soon after, Whyte signed a deal with boxing promoter Frank Maloney.

His professional debut came on May 13, 2011 where he won his match through a decision against Tayar Mehmed. He would go on to win his future matches one by one and eventually got a shot to fight former British heavyweight champion Mike Holdern. Fighting against such high level athletes elevated his personal ability as well as his credibility as a great fighter.

By 2014, Whyte was now scoring some big fights with a win against Kamil Sokolowski, another heavyweight via a TKO. He went on to have highly anticipated matches against stars like Marcelo Luiz Nascimento and Beka Lobjanidze.
