DJK competed in Germany’s second-tier league, the Second Bundesliga, South Division when Dirk joined the squad. Pit Stahl was his first coach. Next to Finnish star forward Martti Kuisma, Dirk established himself as a starter and soon became a consistent double-digit scorer. In 1997, Nowitzki joined the German national basketball team.

His development has been recognized in other countries also. After a year, he took part in the Nike “Hoop Heroes Tour”.
