Born Quentin Leo Cook on July 31, 1963 in Kent, England, Fatboy Slim helped to popularize the big beat genre in early 1990s. Slim’s musical career started in1985 with a band named “The Housemartins”. The band had an early success with a hit single “Happy Hour” and their two albums “London 0 Hull 4” and “The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death”. The latter went on to peal in the Top 10 of the UK Albums Chart.
In 1988, the band led by Paul Heaton split up. Heaton and the drummer Dave Hemingway went to form another band “The Beautiful South” while Cook started to pursue his own style of music he preferred. In 1989, he formed his own band “Beats International” and achieved his first solo with a title song called “Blame It on the Bassline”. It reached No. 29 in the UK Singles chart.
In 1991, they released their second album “Excursion on the Version” but it failed to repeat the success of its predecessor album “Let Them Eat Bingo” and failed to chart.
After that, he formed a band “Freak Power” with Ashley Slater and Jesse Graham. They released their debut album “Drive-Thru Booty” in 1994. Two years later, they released their second album “More of Everything for Everybody”. He also formed the group “The Mighty Dub Katz” but that didn’t work out too well for him.
It was in 1996 he decided to go solo and released his second solo album “Better Living Through Chemistry”. The album contained the Top 40 UK hit “Everybody Needs a 303”. He then released his next album “You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby”. “Praise You” from that album was a massive hit and it was his first UK solo number one. For that song, he won three awards including Breakthrough Video award.
In 2000, he released his third studio album “Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars” and then next one “Palookaville” four years later. In 2006, he released his greatest hit album “Why, Try Harder”. It consisted 18 tracks including Champion Sound and That Old Pair of Jeans.
Other than that, he has been performing with several bands and artists including The Brighton Port Authority, Bootsy Collins, Lateef the Truthspeaker, Macy Gray, Ashley Slater, Damon Albarn, David Byrne, Riva Starr and many more.
He holds the Guinness World Record for the most top 40 hits under different name. He has also won ten MTV Video Music Awards and two BRIT Awards.
Regarding his personal life, he married Zoe Ball in 1999. Together they have a son named Woody Fred Cook and a daughter named Nelly May Lois. After being together for 18 years, Zoe and Fatboy Slim decided to separate on September 24, 2016.
