Early Life and Education

Patricia Mary McKenzie was born on 25 March 1942 in Eastney, Hampshire, to Mary Patricia (née Shaw) and Ronald McKenzie, a Royal Marine who was largely absent throughout her childhood. Woodburn’s early years were marked by profound trauma and adversity. She endured physical abuse from her parents and sexual abuse from her father, experiences that would profoundly shape her resilience and later determination. Her mother, who resented her resemblance to her father, subjected her to severe beatings with household objects including carpet brushes and other implements.

At just three years old, Woodburn was sent to a boarding school run by nuns, where she reported experiencing cruel treatment alongside her older sister Gloria. The nuns, she later recounted, were extremely harsh, and both girls were treated poorly during her time there. Despite these harrowing circumstances, Woodburn found solace and inspiration in her grandmother, a charwoman who possessed remarkable cleaning skills. Her grandmother became a positive influence in her life and taught her the practical knowledge and appreciation for cleanliness that would become her trademark throughout her career. At age fifteen and eleven months, Woodburn left home, and at sixteen, she relocated from Hampshire to Liverpool, where she began working as a live-in cleaner. This move marked the beginning of her journey toward independence and away from her troubled family situation.

Career Highlights

Before becoming a household name, Woodburn worked in various roles including social work with teenage girls in Liverpool children’s homes, retail positions, and as a model for Littlewoods in the late 1960s. She made her first television appearance in 1983 on Pebble Mill at One, demonstrating knitwear, but her career in entertainment lay dormant for the next two decades. During this period, she continued her work as a live-in cleaner, both in the United Kingdom and the United States, honing her expertise and developing her distinctive, no-nonsense approach to household management.

The pivotal moment in Woodburn’s television career arrived in 2002 when Channel 4 actively sought “a really good cleaner with quite a funny temperament” for a new series. A cleaning company recommended the sixty-year-old Woodburn, who was then working as a live-in cleaner for a family in Kent. Following a successful screen test, programme makers paired her with fellow cleaning expert Aggie MacKenzie, and filming for How Clean Is Your House? began just three weeks later. The series premiered in 2003 and proved to be a massive success, running for seven series until 2009. Woodburn’s salty slang, direct attitude, and no-nonsense approach to tackling even the filthiest homes resonated deeply with audiences. She became renowned for her use of natural household solutions such as baking soda, mayonnaise, and white vinegar, advocating for practical and cost-effective cleaning methods. The show’s popularity spawned numerous spin-offs, including a Canadian version titled Kim’s Rude Awakenings (2007–2009), and inspired the creation of accompanying books, board games, and DVDs.

Following the success of How Clean Is Your House?, Woodburn expanded her television presence significantly. She finished as runner-up on the ninth series of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! in 2009, losing to Gino D’Acampo. In 2011, she became a regular panellist on Big Brother’s Bit on the Side, a spin-off from the popular reality series. Her highest-profile reality television appearance came in 2017 when she participated in Celebrity Big Brother, where she finished in third place and immediately became known for her frequent and fiery arguments with fellow housemates. She made frequent guest appearances on ITV’s Loose Women and This Morning, discussing her views with her characteristic candour and wit. In 2022, she appeared on GB News and competed as a contestant on the E4 cooking competition Celeb Cooking School.

Personal Life

Woodburn’s personal life demonstrated her capacity for love and partnership despite her traumatic early years. She was first married to police officer Kenneth Davies in 1971, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1975 due to his violent behaviour and infidelity. In April 1975, she met Peter Woodburn, a police officer who attended a burglary call at a fashion store she was managing. The two developed a lasting connection and married in 1979, beginning a partnership that would endure for over four decades.

Her marriage to Peter proved to be a stable and loving relationship, with Woodburn frequently describing him as her “soulmate” in interviews. The couple did not have any surviving children together. However, Woodburn revealed in her 2006 autobiography Unbeaten that she had experienced significant heartbreak in 1966 when she prematurely gave birth to a stillborn son at age twenty-three. This deeply personal revelation led to a police inquiry, though no action was ultimately taken.

Throughout her life, Woodburn demonstrated remarkable resilience in overcoming her traumatic childhood. She became a voice for abuse survivors and frequently spoke candidly about her experiences. She had a close relationship with her older sister Gloria and several half-siblings from her mother’s remarriage to James McGinley. In 2013, Peter suffered a stroke that left him with muscle numbness and memory loss, presenting new challenges to the couple during their later years together. Despite facing numerous obstacles throughout her life, Woodburn’s determination, humour, and unwavering work ethic made her an inspiration to millions and cemented her legacy as a beloved figure in British television history.
