Early Life and Education

Lucas Hendley Glover was born on November 12, 1979, in Greenville, South Carolina. He is the son of Ron Musselman, a professional baseball player, and Hershey Hendley. When his parents separated when he was two years old and subsequently divorced, Lucas was raised primarily by his mother and his grandfather, Dick Hendley. His stepfather, Jim Glover, played a significant role in his life, and Lucas recognizes him as his father. Dick Hendley, his grandfather, was an accomplished athlete who played football and baseball at Clemson University and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. He also played one season with the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers in 1951.

Glover’s introduction to golf came at an early age when his grandfather presented him with a cut-down club at just three years old. Dick Hendley fostered his grandson’s passion for the sport by taking him to his first Masters Tournament at age six. This early exposure would shape the trajectory of Glover’s entire career. Growing up in South Carolina during the 1980s and 1990s, Glover developed into a talented young golfer, honing his skills at local courses in the Greenville area.

At Wade Hampton High School, Glover emerged as one of the state’s premier junior golfers. He was a three-time High School All-American and won the South Carolina State High School championship as both a freshman and sophomore. Though he finished as runner-up in his junior and senior years, Glover earned All-State honors for all four years of his high school career. His impressive record caught the attention of major college golf programs.

Glover attended Clemson University from 1998 to 2001, continuing his family’s legacy at the institution where his grandfather had achieved Hall of Fame status. During his collegiate career, he was named first-team All-American in both 2000 and 2001, and honorable mention All-American in 1999. He was also selected as a member of the 2001 United States Walker Cup team, representing the United States in international amateur competition. During his time at Clemson, Glover won three significant amateur tournaments, including the South Carolina Amateur in 1998, 1999, and 2000, as well as the prestigious Sunnehanna Amateur in 2001.

Career Highlights

Lucas Glover turned professional in 2001 after his successful amateur career at Clemson. He spent two years developing his game before earning his PGA Tour card via the Nationwide Tour in 2003. His first PGA Tour victory came in 2005 at the Funai Classic at the Walt Disney World Resort, where he finished at 23-under-par 265 with a final-round 65, edging Tom Pernice Jr. by one stroke. This triumph established him as a competitive player on professional golf’s biggest stage.

Glover’s greatest achievement came on June 21, 2009, when he won the U.S. Open at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York. His victory was particularly remarkable given his circumstances going into the event. He was ranked 71st in the Official World Golf Ranking and had never made a cut in his three previous U.S. Open appearances. Additionally, Glover was one of just a handful of players to win the U.S. Open after having to compete in a sectional qualifier. He shot a dominant second round 64, tying the low round of the week with Mike Weir. Despite a final-round 73, he posted a total of 4-under-par 276 to win by two strokes over Phil Mickelson, Ricky Barnes, and David Duval. This victory made Glover the first Clemson graduate and the first native South Carolinian to win a major professional golf championship.

Following the U.S. Open triumph, Glover’s next significant victory came on May 8, 2011, at the Wells Fargo Championship, where he defeated fellow Clemson alumnus Jonathan Byrd in a playoff. This marked his first official win on tour since his U.S. Open victory two years earlier. Throughout his career on the PGA Tour, Glover has accumulated six tour victories. A remarkable achievement came in August 2023, when at age 43, Glover became the third player in his 40s to win back-to-back weeks on the PGA Tour in the last 25 years, claiming victories at both the Wyndham Championship and the FedEx St. Jude Championship in consecutive weeks.

Personal Life

In 2012, Lucas Glover married Krista Glover, née Wakefield, a fashion consultant and influencer. Krista has built a substantial following on social media through her fashion-focused Instagram profile. The couple’s shared life in the public eye has been documented through their social media presence, where they frequently share photos from family vacations, leisure time, and events related to Glover’s professional golf career.

Lucas and Krista have two children together. Their daughter, Lucille, was born in 2013, and their son, Lucas Jr., was born in 2015. The family frequently shares updates showing their beach vacations and other family activities. Glover primarily resides in Jupiter, Florida, a community known for its concentration of professional golfers and their families.
