Paul Bettany was born on 27 May 1971 in London, United Kingdom. He is from a background with history in arts and theatrical performances. His mother, Anne was a theatre teacher, singer, and stage manager and his father, Thane was a drama teacher, dancer, and actor. Thane was Godfather to the Countess of Wessex, Sophie, who is married to Prince Edward, the Queen’s youngest child.
Although Bettany is now an atheist, he was raised as a Christian. He has an older sister named Sarah who lives in England with her daughter. When Bettany was 16 years old, his younger brother, Matthew died from a fall at the age of 8.
Bettany dropped out of school, left home, and started performing on the streets of London by playing a guitar for two years. His parents meanwhile divorced. Paul Bettany met his wife, the American actress, Jennifer Connelly, while filming A Beautiful Mind in 2001. The couple never dated; Bettany had a crush and proposed very soon after revealing his feelings to her. They married in a private ceremony in Scotland in 2003. The same year, they became parents to their son, Stellan – named after Bettany’s friend, the Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard who was his co-star in several movies.
The couple welcomed their daughter, Agnes Lark, in 2011. Bettany is a step father to Connelly’s first child, a son she had with the photographer David Dugan in 1997. The family lived in Tribeca before moving to Brooklyn Heights.
