His mother, Anne was a theatre teacher, singer, and stage manager and his father, Thane was a drama teacher, dancer, and actor. Thane was Godfather to the Countess of Wessex, Sophie, who is married to Prince Edward, the Queen’s youngest child.

Although Bettany is now an atheist, he was raised as a Christian. He has an older sister named Sarah who lives in England with her daughter. When Bettany was 16 years old, his younger brother, Matthew died from a fall at the age of 8.

The same year, he became parents to his son, Stellan – named after Bettany’s friend, the Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard who was his co-star in several movies.

The couple welcomed his daughter, Agnes Lark, in 2011. Bettany is a step father to Connelly’s first child, a son she had with the photographer David Dugan in 1997. The family lived in Tribeca before moving to Brooklyn Heights.
