Early Life And Background
Paul Bettany was born on 27 May 1971 in London, United Kingdom. He is from a background with history in arts and theatrical performances. His mother, Anne was a theatre teacher, singer, and stage manager and his father, Thane was a drama teacher, dancer, and actor. Thane was Godfather to the Countess of Wessex, Sophie, who is married to Prince Edward, the Queen’s youngest child.
Although Bettany is now an atheist, he was raised as a Christian. He has an older sister named Sarah who lives in England with her daughter. When Bettany was 16 years old, his younger brother, Matthew died from a fall at the age of 8.
Bettany dropped out of school, left home, and started performing on the streets of London by playing a guitar for two years. His parents meanwhile divorced. Before the young actor started a three-year course at Drama School, London, he worked for a year at an elderly home. He had dyslexia then which caused him difficulties with reading and learning.

Paul Bettany made a stage debut as an actor at the Aldwych Theatre playing in “An Inspector Call”. This was followed by “Romeo and Juliet”, “Richard III”, and “Caesar” for which he was nominated for Charleson Award. Bettany appeared in “Oliver Twist” series also which was a BBC production.
Paul Bettany made his film debut alongside Ian McKellen, Jude Law and Clive Owen in the Holocaust drama Bent in which he played a very minor role. He had his first leading role in Gangster No.1. The movie earned him two nominations – one for Best actor from the British Independent Film Awards, and the other for the British Newcomer of the Year from London Film Critics’ Circle.

Bettany’s breakthrough in Hollywood was in A Knight’s Tale in 2001. The director of the movie, Brian Helgeland, was determined Bettany should play in his movie. He even wrote the Chaucer part specially for him; and this was a decision he never regretted as the role earned Bettany his first Hollywood award as the Best British Supporting Actor from London Film Critics Circle. Thanks to Helgeland who recognized his talent, Bettany was a cast member of A Beautiful Mind – a movie on which set he met his wife.

In 2003 Paul Bettany featured in Master and Commander: The far side of the world with Russel Crowe. For this role, he earned a BAFTA nomination and won several other awards as the Best actor. In 2004, few of his works were release which included Dogville, The Reckoning, as well as Wimbledon, a romantic comedy in which he played with Kirsten Dust.
Paul Bettany and 13 other actors were invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture of Arts and Sciences in 2004. Bettany played Opus Dei Monk alongside Tom Hanks and Ian McKellen in the movie, The Da Vinci Code. The movie is an adaptation of the novel by the same title, and was released in 2005.

Bettany met Jon Favreau who would later cast him for Jarvis in the sci-fi movie Iron Man. Bettany would play the voice of Jarvis also in the two sequels of the movie – Iron Man 2 and 3 in 2010 and 2013 respectively.
In 2015, he was a cast for Vision in the superhero movie Avangers: Age of Ultron and he portrayed it again in the movies Captain America: Civil War and Avangers: Infinity War.
