Rachel McAdams was born in London, Ontario, Canada on 17 November 1978. She was born Rachel Anne McAdams and was raised in a protestant household. McAdams is the eldest child of Sandra and Lance McAdams. Her mother was a nurse, while her father was a truck driver. She has two siblings, Kayleen McAdams (39) who is a make-up artist, and a brother Daniel McAdams. McAdams is of Scottish and Welsh descent, James Gray, her maternal great grandfather fled to Canada during the American Revolution.

McAdams was a promising figure skater and growing up her peeps thought she would pursue a career in skating; she started skating at four but rejected the offer to move to Toronto to train for skating. Despite that, McAdams continued winning awards in skating until she quit the sport at 18. McAdams was actually interested in sports than in her academics she had often confessed to have feigned sick to avoid classes. While in school, she was active in extra-curricular activities than academics. She was a member of the volleyball, soccer, badminton team and she served in the student council.
