Willie was born on January 10, 1938 in Mobile, Alabama as the seventh child of ten to Frank and Esther McCovey. As an amateur baseball player, he played for a Giants’ farm in Dallas, Texas which was part of the Class AA Southern League. He also played for the Pacific Coast League Phoenix Giants before making his move to San Francisco Giants.
McCovey made his debut for the San Francisco Giants on July 30, 1959. In his 52 major league games, he had a .354 batting average and 13 home runs. He was named National League’s Rookie of the year. In 1962, he helped Giants to win the World Series against the New York Yankees. His best year with the Giants came in 1969 when he hit 45 home runs, had 126 RBI and batted .320 to become the National League MVP. He played with the Giants until 1973.
In 1973, McCovey was traded to San Diego Padres. He played 128 games in 1974 and 122 games in 1975. He hit 22 home runs in 1974 and 23 in 1975. He also played for Oakland Athletics in 1976 and then returned back to San Francisco Giants in 1977 and played there till 1980 for second time in his career.
During his career, he was a six time All-Star selection, was a NL Rookie of the year in 1959 and NL MVP in 1969. He was also named the MLB All-Star Game MVP in 1969. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986 and his #44 number jersey was retired by the San Francisco Giants.
Regarding his personal life, he was married to Karen McCovey. Together he had one daughter named Allison McCovey. On August 1, 2018, he married for second time to Estela Bejar. On October 31, 2018, McCovey died at the age of 80 at Stanford University Medical Center.

Willie Lee McCovey was born on January 10, 1938, in Mobile, Alabama, the seventh of ten children born to Frank McCovey, a railroad worker, and Esther. Growing up in segregated Mobile, Willie discovered baseball through evening radio broadcasts. Economic necessity forced him to begin working at age twelve, and he eventually dropped out of Central High School—the same school attended by future Hall of Famer Hank Aaron—to work full time delivering newspapers, working at a bakery, and clearing tables.
At sixteen, McCovey moved to Los Angeles to pursue baseball. In 1955, at seventeen, he tried out for the New York Giants at his training camp in Melbourne, Florida, earning a spot on a minor league team. His development through the minors proceeded smoothly, building the foundation for his legendary major league career.

McCovey’s MLB career spanned twenty-two years, with nineteen seasons for the San Francisco Giants. On July 30, 1959, he debuted against the Philadelphia Phillies going four-for-four against Hall of Famer Robin Roberts.
