Carol Creighton Burnett is an American actress, comedian, and writer, who is best known for her TV show called The Carol Burnett Show which was a big hit for many years. Along with her primary role in this show, her career has also been filled with a big dose of comedy which she says is very passionate about.

Early Life

Burnett was born on April 26, 1933 in San Antonio, Texas. Both of her parents came from a background that was into films. However, they were also alcoholics which meant that her childhood wasn’t very peaceful at all. Later on, she grew up with the help of her grandmother as her parents went through a stiff divorce.

Because of the need to support her grandmother, she started working from a young age at the Warner Brothers Theater at a low end job at first. However, she was soon fired from this job. After finishing her studies from Hollywood High School in 1951, Burnett went to UCLA, where she studied theatre arts as well as English.

Burnett had dreams for a career in musical comedy in New York but didn’t have the financial capabilities. She was very lucky in a way that a man who was very impressed with one of her on-stage performances, decided to provide her a loan of $1000 which was to be paid back within 5 years without any interest. Back in her days, this was a very large amount and she is very thankful for that man whose only condition was for her to help other aspiring artists once she succeded.

Career

She didn’t receive the kind of acting jobs she desired right away so she started working as a hat-check girl. One of her earliest roles was for The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show in 1955 where she had small roles. Even though this was a small role, it led her to getting into the cast of a sitcom called Stanley where she played a starring role for a year.

With time, she got the opportunity as a performer for shows like The Tonight Show, hosted by Jack Paar, and The Ed Sullivan Show. This would lead to her selection on Broadway for a musical called Once Upon a Mattress, which in a way was her breakthrough role. After receiving a nomination for a Tony Award, her stock instantly went up and she now had a broadened array of opportunities in her sight. She went on to get an Emmy Award for The Garry Moore Show.

But the main highlight of her career has been hosting The Carol Burnett Show. This show initially debuted on television on 1967 and consistently got success for more than a decade. Today, she has 23 Emmy Awards to her name for this show along with many other prestigious awards to her name.

Burnett married Don Saroyan in 1955. The couple were together since their college days but would eventually go their separate ways in 1962. She later married Joe Hamilton in 1963 and they had three children together named Carrie, Jody, and Erin. Their marriage would end in 1984. In 2001, Burnett married Brian Miller, a drummer who is 23 years younger than her.
