Introduction
Joel Courtney is an American actor, who is best known for his performance in Steven Spielberg’s hit film Super 8 where he played the role of Joseph “Joe” Lamb. He’s most recent appearances have been in the Netflix original called “The Kissing Booth”.
Early Life
Courtney was born on January 31, 1996, in Monterey, California. He grew up for the most part in Moscow, Idaho. During the first week of his summer school break in 2010, Courtney went on a journey to Los Angeles to meet up with his older brother. This trip was not one with any commercial aspirations in mind, it was just a normal trip. However, something had struck Courtney and he hoped that he would be able to land a commercial there where he could ideally pocket $100.
For the young Courtney, who’s mind was filled with the thought about Los Angeles being the center for such media, he was motivated to be able to do it. But this trip would go on to change his life.
Career
Things happen, and some pretty miraculous events unfolded for the young 14 year old. Rather than returning home thinking about the summer homework that he had to do, he now had to start working on a feature film that was to be produced by the legend of the business, Steven Spielberg.
What had happened was that the casting director for the film, Patti Kalles noticed Courtney and instantly asked him to audition for Super 8. This was an unusual move from the director but what Kalles saw was a kid who was perfect for the role, which would be for a character called Joseph “Joe” Lamb. With a short process, he landed this role and soon started taking some acting lessons to prepare for it as well.
The setting of the film is of 1979. It features a group of friends who witness a horrific train crash while making a super 8 movie and their curiosity leads them to some unexpected findings. This was a film which featured stars Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler, Gabriel Basso, Noah Emmerich, Ron Eldard, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee and Zach Mills.
It’s not usual for a young kid with no experience whatsoever to become a star of a commercially hit film. He also won the Best Ensemble Acting award at the Phoenix Film Critics Society Awards in 2011. He even went on to win the award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor in 2012, a big achievement considering it was his first film.
