Michelle Danielle Collins was born on 28 May 1962 at Hackney Hospital in Hackney, East London. Her mother, Mary, was Welsh, while her father was of English and Flemish heritage, with her Flemish grandfather originally from Antwerp who emigrated to the United Kingdom in 1915. Collins grew up alongside her elder sister Vicki, primarily raised by their mother in Highbury, London.
When Collins was fourteen, her mother returned to university to pursue a law degree, a pivotal moment that emphasized education in the household. During the 1970s, Collins was an active member of the Woodcraft Folk youth organization, including a visit to Romania. Her performing arts training began at fourteen at the Royal Court Activists and Cockpit Youth Theatre, two prestigious institutions for developing theatrical talent. She continued at Kingsway Princeton College, studying drama and theatre at O-level and A-level.

Collins’ path to prominence began before her television breakthrough. She performed in the 1978 music video for Squeeze’s “Cool For Cats” and worked as a backing singer for Mari Wilson and the Wilsations. Her early television credits included appearing alongside Gary Oldman in BBC’s “Morgan’s Boy,” two series of the sitcom “Running Wild,” and guest appearances on “The Bill.”
Her big break came when EastEnders producer Julia Smith spotted her filming the BBC play “Pressures” in 1988, leading to an audition for Cindy Beale. Initially contracted for just eleven episodes, her portrayal proved a hit, leading to an extended run from 1988-1990 and 1992-1998. Cindy became one of the show’s central antagonists, known for infidelity, scheming, and her troubled marriage to Ian Beale. Her return to EastEnders in 2023 after 25 years was met with considerable excitement from fans.
Beyond EastEnders, Collins starred in BBC’s “Real Women” (1998-99), “Sunburn” (1999-2000, singing the theme song which reached number 28 on the UK singles chart), and “Two Thousand Acres of Sky” (2001-03). She guest-starred in “Casualty” (2014), “Death in Paradise” (2015), “Midsomer Murders” (2016), and Doctor Who episode “42” (2007).
