His father was of African American descent while his mother is of European descent.  He developed an interest in music from an early age when his older brother was doing a school project involving classical music and brought a CD of Three Tenors to his home. He was surprised by the skill of the music and their operatic styles.

Boyd attended Sikeston High school and graduated in 1994. He then received bachelor’s degree in speech communications from Southeast Missouri State University and also a bachelor’s degree in music from University of Missouri. After that, he received a master’s degree in management from the online University of Phoenix.

During his time at the Missouri State University, he was the president of the Student Senate and also a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He was also the winner of the music Teachers National Association in 2000. After that, he went to teach music for one year and then attended New England Conservatory of Music in Boston to study Opera.

It was in 2008, where he was most famous for his showing his singing skills in America’s Got Talent. He was the winner of America’s Got Talent and was awarded $1 million prize. Boyd then signed to Decca Records and released his debut album titled “My American Dream” on June 23, 2009. The album was hit and debuted at 195 on the Billboard 200 and #3 on Top Classical Albums chart. Boyd has also performed for some of the biggest names in politics like Barack Obama, George H. W Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Boyd was also actively involved in politics. He was in favor of Republican Party and ran for a seat in the Missouri House of Representatives in 2012 but lost to Democrat Steve Hodges. Next year, he again ran for the Missouri House of Representatives but was defeated in Republican primary by Don Rone.

On June 10, 2018 Neal Boyd died of heart/kidney failure and liver disease. He was 42 years old.
