Dereck was born on December 29, 1983 in Harare, Zimbabwe. His family moved to United Kingdom in 1999 and lived in London. Upon arriving there, he attended Churchill School.

Chisora’s boxing career as a professional started in 2007 against Istvan Kecskes. He won his debut match in a second round via TKO. He won his next three matches all by decision and came up against the British heavyweight champion Sam Sexton in his fifth match of his career. He won the fight by stopping Sexton in the final round. He finished his remarkable year with a victory against Neil Simpson leaving him with 8-0 record at the end of his second year as a professional.

He started 2009 with a win against Russian Daniil Peretyatko. He then went on to win series of consecutive matches against Paul Butlin, Zurab Noniashvili, Carl Baker and then end 2010 with a win against Sam Sexton in a rematch.

2011 and 2012 was a bad year for Chisora. He lost his first match in his entire career against Tyson Fury and then lost three consecutive matches against Robert Helenius, Vitali Klitschko and David Haye. He returned strong in 2015 winning five out of five matches.
