Povetkin who is also known by his nickname as White lion and Sasha was born on September 2, 1979 in Kursk, Russia. He started his amateur boxing career in 1997 winning the World Junior Championship. In 1999 he won the World title and a European professional kickboxing title a year later. He has several awards and titles to his name. He won gold medal at super-heavyweight boxing at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece. He has also won Oil Cup in 2001, Russian Championship in 2001 and many more. He finished his amateur career with a record 125-7.

Povetkin made his professional debut in 2005 by defeating German Muhammad Ali Durmaz via TKO in second round. The same year, he won three back to back wins against Cerrone Fox, John Castle, Stephane Tessier and concluded his brilliant first year with a win against Willie Chapman.

He started 2006 with a win against Richard Bango. He then went on to win series of matches against the boxers like Livin Castillo, Ed Mahone, David Bostice, Larry Donald, Chris Byrd, Eddie Chambers, Taurus Sykes, Leo Nolan and many others. He had 21-0 record till 2010.

In 2011, he won the vacant WBA heavyweight title against Ruslan Chageava and then retained his title against Cedric Boswell four months later. His first loss of his career came against Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko in the 12th round where he lost his WBA heavyweight title.

Since then, he hasn’t lost a single match and won against boxers like Carlos Takam, Mike Perez, Andriy Rudenko, Christian Hammer and David Price. In total of 35 matches, he has won 34 of them and has lost only once where 24 of those win came via KO. He will now compete against Anthony Joshua for WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles.

Regarding his personal life, he has a daughter named Arina with his ex-wife Irina. He married Yevgenia Merkulova in 2013.
