Enzo Calzaghe was an Italian boxing trainer. Enzo is remembered as the father of Joe Calzaghe. He, along with his son Joe, was co-founder of Calzaaghe Promotions. Before his death, Enzo Calzaghe net worth is estimated to be $8 million.
Enzo was born on January 1, 1949 in Sassari, Sardinia, Italy. He started his career as a musician playing the bass guitar for his uncle’s band “Survival”. In order to earn more money, he decided to travel around Europe as a busker. He had to move from city to city, often sleeping rough in city squares and phone boxes.
One day he arrived at Bournemouth where his aunt ran a restaurant. He worked at the restaurant and saved enough money to go back home to Italy. He then moved to Cardiff.
After moving to Cardiff, he got involved in boxing gym and met Paul Williams, who was trainer of the Newbridge boxing club. Williams invited his son Joe to the gym and Calzaghe became Paul’s assistant trainer.
His son Joe, as a boxer competed from 1993 to 2008. He won world championships in two weight classes including WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and many more. Enzo has won ‘Coach of the Year’ at the BBC Sports Personality Awards, Ring Magazine trainer of the Year for 2007 and the Futch-Condon Award, awarded by Boxing writers Association of America for trainer of the year 2007. His career ended after his son Joe decided to retire in 2008.
Some of the fighters he trained are Enzo Maccarinelli, Gavin Rees, Nathan Cleverly, Bradley Pryce and Gary Lockett. Calzaghe was also awarded MBE in 2011 and had a bridge named after him and son Joe, in their hometown of Newbridge.
Enzo met his wife Jackie in Cardiff. They were married four weeks later. The pair lived in Sardina and London before the birth of Joe. He also has two daughters named Sonia and Melissa.
On September 17, 2018 Enzo Calzaghe died at the age of 69. He will be remembered as Britain’s greatest ever trainers.
