Hilderbrand was born on 1950 in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, United States. She went to Methacton High School and then went to Johns Hopkins University. Prior to that she worked as a teaching/writing fellow at the University of Iowa Writer’s Workshop.
She spent her childhood life playing football, collecting sea glass and digging pools for hermit crabs in her hometown. When she was 16 years old, her father died in a plane crash. In 1993, she moved from Collegeville to Nantucket to work at a local paper. It was there, she started writing.
Hilderbrand started writing books professionally in 2000. Her first published book was titled “The Beach Club”.
