Lee Roy was born on December 21, 1956 in Stephenville, Texas, United States. He first performed at the age of six on the Bob Wills show. In 1987, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he signed with Arista Nashville two years later.

His first self-titled album for Arista Records came in 1990. It consisted of singles like Crocodile Tears, Oughta Be a Law and Family Tree. In 1992, he released his next album ‘Love Without Mercy’ and it consisted of hit singles like ‘What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am’ which peaked at No. 2. Songs like The Rock and Tender Moment were also hit at that time.
