Francesco was born on November 8, 1982 in Turin Italy. He is the younger brother of Edoardo Molinari who is also a professional golfer. He has won Italian Amateur Stroke Play Championship twice, Italian Match Play Championship during his amateur career.

In 2004, he turned pro and earned his European Tour card for 2005 qualifying school. In 2006, he claimed his first European Tour victory by winning the Telecom Italia Open. His ranked moved to top 50 in 2009 in the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time.

On November 7, 2010, he won the WGC-HSBC Championship in China and the same year, he also represented Europe in the 2010 Ryder Cup. Molinari had a tough time during 2013-14 season as he didn’t register any win but he managed to play several PGA Tour events because of his steady positions in the official golf rankings.
