His father Major Owens was a music and literature teacher who later went on to serve in the New York State Senate and United States House of Representatives. He went to High School of Performing Arts and then graduated cum laude from Yale University in 1983.

He developed an interest in acting by playing in a local theater at Arcata High School where he played the role of Peter Pan. However, his professional acting came in 1985 when he made his television debut on the second season of “The Cosby Show” as Elvin Tibideaus. He became a regular character in 1987 and appeared on the series till 1992.

He responded the person criticizing his job saying that his job like all others is important and every job has dignity and worth. He also said that due to negative attention, he is no longer with Trader Joe’s.
